Our Social Media Takeaways
Hi! We - at Khima - are primarily Millennials. We've been using social media since it first emerged, witnessing the shifts, algorithm updates, interface changes, and countless experiments.
We've been in the loop since the early 2000s, so we feel confident in sharing the insights we've gathered over the years.
IT’S NEITHER EVIL NOR PERFECT
Social media isn't the evil some make it out to be. It’s also not perfect, but it offers a vast platform to express ourselves. Whether people listen depends on us—on what we say, how we say it, and how often we speak.
We need to understand the rules. With our background in political science, we must remind that social media platforms are not democracies; they are autocracies. Freedom of speech is limited, and if we don't follow the rules, we get punished or kicked out. We don’t have the power to change things or bend algorithms to our will. It may not be fair, but it's a business, not a charity. Always keep that in mind. So, here’s the first takeaway:
You're playing by social media's rules, not your own - understand who you're dealing with.
This is an old but gold article about Mark Zuckerberg; he is a king and essentially owns a nation.
THE RULES YOU SHOULD FOLLOW
Here are a few concise rules you should keep in mind:
If you don't put in the effort (your energy), you won't get results.
To truly understand social media, you must actively use it!
Consistency (not content) is key.
Follow their recommendations - they will reward you.
Personal profiles attract more attention than business pages (think how to use it wisely!).
Be genuine, be yourself, and present things as they truly are.
Photos definitely sell. Don't overdo it – they shouldn't look like they're from Shutterstock, but they still need to be appealing.
SOME TIPS THAT MIGHT HELP YOU AS WELL
Don't overthink the content you publish - you can delete it anytime, and no one will remember (basically, no one cares).
Facebook ads are becoming easier to use. You learn as you go, and you don't need specific skills. The same can't be said for Google ads. Despite the updated interface, you still need to understand the terminology and technical aspects, or trust a professional (which we highly recommend).
In some countries, Facebook functions as the entire internet. This is why it's an effective platform for selling.
LinkedIn is the best social media platform for diving into the business world, networking, and making new connections. While your feed might seem outdated compared to TikTok, you can tailor it to create an information bubble that supports your professional growth!
Pinterest can be far more effective for brand awareness than you might expect.
